Weeki Wachee, Florida, is a roadside attraction that dates back to 1947. The Weeki Wachee Mermaid Show, an underwater show in the head of a natural spring, features women performing as mermaids for a captive audience. Weeki Wachee has been visited by numerous celebrities, including Elvis and Esther Williams.

“Mermaid” concentrates on women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s who performed as mermaids at Weeki Wachee in their youth. Ten years ago, they formed an alumni group that puts on two underwater shows a month. These women describe the experience of performing in the spring as liberating; they feel compelled to return to Weeki Wachee to be mermaids again.
